Session Overviews

Application of Performance Prediction to Enterprise Data Management –

by Dr. Boris Zibitsker

It can be very difficult to apply performance prediction modeling to enterprise databases.  Most modeling approaches focus on server utilization metrics and therefore only model changes to these metrics and/or the underlying hardware.  In this presentation we will review how performance modeling can be used to also evaluate database design optimizations and application performance enhancements.  In particular, we will discuss how performance prediction models can be used to evaluate alternatives and justify changes in database design, applications, and IT infrastructure.

We will review several examples of multi-tier, distributed environments based on Oracle 10g RAC, DB2 UDB ESE and Teradata  These case studies will illustrate the value of performance prediction during all phases of a project, both pre- and post-implementation, for forecasting workload/database growth, for capacity planning, and for server/application/data consolidation.

Infrastructure optimization through the use of virtualization – by Jonathan McCormick of VMWare

VMware Virtual Infrastructure 3 (VI3) transforms individual VMware ESX Servers into shared, distributed virtual infrastructure.  New features of VI3 serve to make virtualized computing more appealing from a service management, operational, availability, and load balancing perspective. The VI3 solution set includes VMFS, a Distributed File System; VMware VMotion; VMware Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS); VMware High Availability (HA); and VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB). These features facilitate the ability to add capacity on-demand with little or no disruption to existing applications as well as minimize the impact of infrastructure hardware failures thus increasing application availability.

During this session, we will review VMware systems architecture as it relates to performance and capacity planning. We will address server consolidation considerations for implementing a virtualized computing environment. The use of VirtualCenter for monitoring real time utilization as well as long term performance trending and capacity planning will be presented. We will also highlight the memory management in VMware’s hypervisor and discuss the options for using VMware DRS for load balancing and seamlessly moving workloads from one server in a VI3 cluster to another.

Show and Tell

Two “Show and Tell” sessions will be presented by Capacity Planners from our area:

  • Chris Althen from Met Life – will discuss
    • Techniques that they use at MetLife when analyzing Capacity questions
    • The MetLife approach to System P virtualization to achieve higher physical utilization
    • Using Virtual allocations as a chargeback method
    • Incorporating business forecasts into the annual capacity planning process

  • Wayne Bell from Unigroup will demonstrate various methods of forecasting data based on historical information.  Each of these techniques will produce different results that become more noticeable the further the forecast is extended.

o   Trend Lines in Excel – but no forecasting

o   Linear Regression

o   Linear Regression of the Log

o   Linear Regression of the Log of the Difference

o   Rolling Averages

o   Weighted Rolling Averages
