Performance
and Capacity Management of Virtual Environments
Chris Molloy, IBM
The growing popularity of having virtual environments running on
distributed servers has rekindled an interest in performance and
capacity techniques of virtual machines. This presentation will
discuss many of the characteristics of managing the performance
of virtual environments, and will use a current virtualization pilot
to relate many of the issues facing performance and capacity management
personnel as they implement virtualization on these distributed
machines.
Unix Discoveries
by a Mainframe Dinosaur
Tom Lynch
In 15+ years of capacity/performance work on mainframes, vm/vse/mvs,
I had a lot of preconceived notions about systems monitoring. Now
that I have over five years of UNIX 'experience' in this same endevor,
I have a new view of life. The mainframe OS's are rich with monitoring
and measurement tools integrated into the 'kernel, Not so in UNIX.
We've also had a lot of experience with 'users' that allow us to
'reasonably predict' with little real input. UNIX is a different
world. This presentation will attempt to share some of my experiences,
how I resolved my dilemmas, and put forward some questions I still
have.
Discovering Performance
Antipatterns using Rational Quantify
Clair Cates, SAS Institute, Inc.
Weve all heard about performance antipatterns, yet how do
you find these problems in your system? I have used Rational Quantify
for over 7 years and have learned many tips and tricks to help uncover
many common antipatterns. This presentation will describe the wealth
of data generated by Quantify and how to use this data to uncover
common software performance problems such as:
- Excessive Memory Allocation
- The Ramp
- Unnecessary Processing
- One Lane Bridge
- How Many Times Do I have to tell you?
- Unbalanced Processing and
- More is Less

Performance Based Allocation by DTS Software
Duane Reaugh, DTS Software
DTS Software's Allocation Control Center (ACC) can direct your critical
data set allocations based on delivered response and location of
other data sets. The speaker will discuss the benefits of data set
separation for performance and availability. The advantages of directing
data sets to devices that are providing measured response times
consistent with the service level agreements that an installation
may have in place.

Speakers:
Chris Molloy
Senior Technical Staff Member at IBM, where he works in their Global
Services division. With over 20 years of IT experience, Chris focuses
on improving system management solutions for his customers. He is
a frequent speaker at CMG, and holds a patent for some of his work
in performance management and capacity planning.
Claire Cates
Principal Systems Developer - SAS Institute, Inc. Claire has been
with SAS Institute for almost 20 years. During this time she has
been involved in the development of many areas of the SAS System.
For the past 7 years she has worked primarily on software performance
and resource usage. Using 3rd party and in-house tools, Claire has
been able to locate inefficient algorithms and recommend changes
in order to improve overall system performance.
BS Computer Science NCSU
MS Computer Science - University of South Carolina
Tom Lynch
Tom has 37 years experience in the IT industry, 25 years with IBM,
development, support and sales, approximately 30 years in performance/capacity
with, os/dos(yes the real one)/vm/svs/mvs/xa/zos/unix. last 12 years
in technical support areas.
Duane Reaugh
Dauane has been in mainframe Data Processing for over 30 years and
Manager of Technical Support for DTS Software for almost 10 years.
He has a Bachelor's degree in Physics and a Masters in Computer
Science from William and Mary. DTS Software writes and markets Storage
Management products for IBM z/OS operating system.
