J2EE and WebSphere on z/OS Level
Peter Enrico, Enterprise Performance Strategies, Inc.
Abstract:
This presentation will be an overview of the J2EE architectural standard, as
well as an introduction to WebSphere on z/OS. The purpose of this
presentation is to help you gain a better working knowledge of the
e-business technologies, J2EE standard, and what it means to be a J2EE
application server. Also included in this session will be an overview of
WebSphere on z/OS and how, and why, a product such as WebSphere is needed to
satisfy the J2EE standard.
So if you are curious what a Enterprise JavaBean is (and why it is not the same as a JavaBean) then you will find this session of interest. You will become familiar with terms such as JVM, Servlet, EJB, JSP, MVC, Connector, application server, web server, and many more terms.
Bio:
Peter Enrico, of Enterprise Performance Strategies, Inc., has strong and
diverse experience with the IBM S/390 and zArchitecture platforms, and a
solid background in Workload Manager, WebSphere, Java, J2EE architecture,
and Web Services on the zArchitecture platform. His expertise extends to
OS/390 and z/OS performance management, Parallel Sysplex, UNIX System
Services, and the many components of e-business performance on MVS.
Peter Enrico is a well-known and effective lecturer and seminar instructor. He teaches on a wide array of topics including Workload Manager, WebSphere for z/OS, basic MVS performance, Parallel Sysplex, UNIX System Services, and much more. His classes include 'WLM Performance and Re-evaluation of Goals', 'S/390 Java, J2EE, Web Serving and WebSphere on z/OS Performance', and 'Essential z/OS Performance Tuning'. All have drawn great praise from a wide variety of customers and corporations.
More information about Peter Enrico can be found at http://www.epstrategies.com.
Peter is a regular speaker at SHARE, IBM's zOS Expo, both national and regional CMGs, and a variety of international conferences.
WLM - A Cookbook Approach to Revisiting WLM Goals
Peter Enrico, Enterprise Performance Strategies, Inc.
Abstract:
OK - you've successfully migrated to goal mode and have even been there for
a while. Your workloads are running well, goals are being met, and it
appears your resources are being used efficiently. Life is good. However,
you should realize, for a variety of reasons, you need to regularly revisit
and reevaluate your WLM service definition and goals.
During the presentation, Peter Enrico will draw from his WLM expertise and experience to present a cookbook approach to revisiting and reevaluating WLM goals and a WLM service definition. Peter will discuss, at a high level, the approach he recommends that performance analysts take to ensure that WLM maintains a steady path towards effective management of workloads toward assigned goals and towards effective use of system resources. During the presentation, Peter hopes to teach you something about the Workload Manager on z/OS that you may not already have known.
Metrics for Virtual Tape
William T Gray, Storage Technology Corporation
Abstract:
Which measurements should I use to track performance and load on my virtual
tape subsystem? What is important and what is not? I present a series of
metrics (with associated philosophy) that I use for tuning and planning.
Bio:
In IT since 1972 in every possible area. Joined STK 15 years ago and
for the last 5 years have been active in HQ. Primarily involved with
performance and tuning of virtual tape. Work related interests are
statistics and modeling. Write thriller novels instead of watching TV.
The Holy Grail: Reporting IT Performance to the Business
Rick Ralston, Whirlpool Corp.
Abstract:
One of the hardest things to report on is IT performance to the business in
a meaningful manner. The business doesn't understand IT because the IT
metrics are mostly unintelligible to the business. Translating those
metrics to business meaningful reports is challenging. Through the use of
data warehousing, reporting tools, collaboration and the web, this reporting
is becoming possible. This presentation discusses the business reporting of
IT metrics, the tools, methods, and the presenter's efforts to create
meaningful reporting.
Bio:
Rick Ralston has been involved in performance analysis and capacity planning
since 1978 at various companies. His current employer is Whirlpool Corp. He
is actively involved with CMG and is a director of the Midwest CMG chapter.
CICS Performance Management 2003
Ivan L. Gelb, Gelb Information Systems Corp.
Abstract:
Performance management controls of CICS for MVS/ESA and CICS Transaction
Server (TS) for OS/390 - z/OS regions greatly affect the utilization of
computer resources, and, as a result, the effective capacity of a CICS
complex is impacted. This presentation will focus on the parameters and
OS/390 - z/OS environmental factors which affect a CICS region’s total
demand for processor capacity, real storage, virtual storage and disk
input/output service. Workload Manager (WLM) Release 10 and later changes
that may help or hinder CICS will be included. The potential risks and
benefits associated with the selection of actual and default values will be
identified. Samples of reports for health monitoring and problem analysis
will be included.
Bio:
Ivan L. Gelb has been involved with on-line systems and applications as part
of his extensive hands-on experience with mainframe and client/server
environments of all sizes. His technical and management background includes
(a) determination of hardware and software requirements for high-performance
and high-availability systems; (b) effectiveness evaluations and
optimization of computer systems performance; (c) data base and data
communications systems design, implementation, and performance improvements;
and (d) capacity requirements forecasting and development of proprietary
analysis techniques and software packages.
Mr. Gelb is a frequently invited speaker at software conferences and Computer Measurement Group meetings. His seminars on performance management and capacity planning have been attended by representatives from hundreds of organizations in the United States and internationally. He is an invited member of the IBM Gold Consultants Program for OS/390, DB2, TP and message processing.
