9:00-10:00 - "Managing Application Service Delivery Over Public Networks"
Laura Berg, Consulting Services, FORTEL, Inc.
eBusiness is really no different than business. All the same business models are still valid and the customer is still number one. However, servicing these customers has now got to be at Internet speed.
This presentation will use a case based approach towards analyzing the basic framework of an eBusiness application, demonstrating how to visualize service levels and effectively perform realtime root cause analysis based on progressive analysis and correlation of service and utilization data. With data volumes exploding, and the number of users accessing data through the Internet growing exponentially, speed and performance become critical competitive differentiators. In this presentation, we will discuss several capacity management and database optimization issues related to planning, building, managing, and controlling performance of very large-scale data warehouses and e-Business applications in the world. We will review several case studies based on our methodology, incorporating a holistic systems approach, performance prediction, and statistical process control technique.

10:15-11:30 - "Exploiting Web Publishing Technology To Enhance Performance Reporting"
Claude Aron, Web Technology Consultant, Chevron Information Technology Co.
The use of corporate intranets for publishing reports of all kinds is now well-established standard. While there are some inherent advantages to moving from paper-based reporting to web-based reporting, if all you do is transfer existing reports to a browser-based environment then you're missing out on some real opportunities. The web environment offers some unique and interesting capabilities in user interface design and interactivity options that can be implemented by anyone (e.g. performance analysts) with a basic programming background and a little bit of effort.
This presentation includes several examples of how to present performance data in a way that exploits the power of web publishing technology. The examples illustrate the use of such features and technologies as framesets, forms, hyperlinks, javascript, VBscript, Active Server Pages, SAS HTML utilities, etc. Source code for all the examples is included in the appendix to the paper and you should be able to adapt most of these techniques to your environment fairly easily.

2:15-3:30 - "Performance Analysis of Virtual Tape Subsystems"
Ned A. Diehl, Senior Consultant, The Information Systems Manager, Inc.
Virtual tape (VT) subsystems are an important part of a large percentage of OS/390 installations. While, they do a beautiful job of solving many traditional tape problems, they are not all things for all installations. VT systems present some interesting challenges, since while they look like real tape drives to standard OS/390 performance monitors, there are important internal activities that those monitors do not see. The two primary implementations (IBM VTS and STK VSM) both produce SMF records which provide metrics unique to virtual tape. Approaches to analysis will be discussed and will include both an RMF view and virtual tape measurements. Graphical examples will be drawn from a variety of different types of installations. While most examples will be based on STK VSM, specific IBM VTS metric references will also be provided. There will be no attempt to compare the performance and merits of different architectures, though the techniques presented can help installations with comparative analysis.
