Agenda

8:30 – 9:30      Registration and Continental Breakfast

9:30 – 10:30    Forecasting Data Center Power Requirements:  Tips from the Trenches

                        Speaker: Frank Bereznay, Kaiser Permanente

Measuring and forecasting Data Center electrical power usage can be an elusive goal.  This paper shares tips and lessons learned in trying to measure and forecast UPS usage profiles as equipment is removed and added. Overall UPS usage profiles are examined to dispel some common myths about equipment power usage.  Power usage profiles for common equipment types are examined, especially configurable assets.  Power usage metrics are provided for some common equipment types.  Measuring techniques are explored and some suggested reporting formats are provided

10:45 – 11:45  Using SAS/Graph to Display Performance and Capacity Data

Speaker:  Rick Ralston, Humana Corporation

This presentation shows a few useful tips and information for developing graphs using SAS/Graph.  The presentation then focuses on building and using heat charts to display performance and capacity data in an interesting and usable manner.  Heat charts provide the ability to visualize 3 dimensional data in 2 dimensions.  The techniques used are platform independent, although the work was done on the z/OS platform.

11:45 ‑ 1:00    NCCMG Business Meeting/Lunch

1:00 – 2:00      Greening your Data Center

                        Speaker: Mark Bramfitt, PGE

Mr. Bramfitt will provide a utility perspective on data center growth, and will provide information about PG&E's industry-leading energy efficiency program and service portfolio for data centers and IT infrastructure.  PG&E provides education and training, technical support services, and financial incentives and rebates for qualifying energy efficiency projects.

2:15 – 3:15      To CUP or Not CUP

Speaker:  Dr. Stephen Guendert, Brocade Corporation

CUP, or Control Unit Port is a holdover from ESCON directors. In a FICON environment, CUP allows for in-band management, and opens the door to FICON director performance metrics via the RMF 74-7 record, more commonly known as the FICON Director Activity Report. In an effort to reduce acquisition costs and be more competitive on price, many vendors will try and make the case why you do not need CUP on FICON directors. This paper will present the reasons why, from a performance management perspective, “that not to CUP” is the wrong answer to the question posed by the title.
