1:45 – 2:00              Break Sponsored by XIOtech

2:00 - 2:45        Fibre Channel - the Past, the Present, and the Future with focus on Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) and standardization of 16GFC – Horst L. Truestedt

Fibre Channel (FC) and FC SANs provide:

·         High bandwidth (100 to 800MB/s today)

·         Long distances (to 50km per hop). Several implementations are designed to support 160km distances (100 miles)

·         Large connectivity - millions of devices can exist on the same network

·         SANs facilitate new technologies (server clustering, storage clustering, LAN-free tape backup, remote mirroring, etc.)

Fibre Channel has a clear roadmap to provide:

·         Higher performance (16Gb/s)

·         MRD already defined for 32Gb/s)

·         Additional capabilities (Security, Tiered Storage, Intelligence)

·         Backward compatibility

·         2x Data Rates auto-negotiate to highest rate

·         FCoE is transparent to FC ports

Fibre Channel over Ethernet

·         expected to lower cost of 10Gb/s Ethernet

·         allows one Adapter and Fabric switch for both IP and Storage

·          provides seamless transition from Host to existing FC SAN

·         Data Center Convergence

Horst L Truestedt joined the IBM Corporation in Rochester, MN in 1968  after working for six years at the 3M Co in St. Paul, MN. He has worked in several divisions of IBM (including assignments to Germany and Japan) in the design and development of Optical Character Recognition equipment; as manager of Diagnostics Engineering on System/36 and System/38; and, on storage product attachments for S/36, S/38, 4300, 9370, and AS/400.

Before retiring from IBM in 1997, Truestedt had been involved with DASD interfaces and attachment architecture. He was the principal voting member for IBM at ANSI T11 - Intelligent Peripheral Interface (IPI), High Performance Parallel Interface (HIPPI), Fibre Channel (FC), and Enterprise System Connectivity (SBCON); represented IBM SSD on the Fibre Channel Association (FCA); represented IBM as co-founder of the Redundant Array of Independent Disk (RAID) Advisory Board; represented ANSI T11 at the International Standards Organization (ISO); and, consulted for large IBM systems world-wide.
