AIX EXTRA: Planning for LPAR and DLPAR
Jaqui Lynch, Mainline Information Systems

The introduction of logical partitioning (LPAR) and dynamic logical partitioning (DLPAR) with AIX 5 has caused a major change in the thought processes involved in planning in the pSeries world. Previously, correctly sizing a system involved pre-planning for resource consumption in terms of memory, CPU, DASD and adapters. While new dynamic partitioning features on pSeries partitionable systems have introduced flexibility in resource allocation that minimizes these constraints, other types of planning are now required.  Ms. Lynch will provide details for that planning.

Monitoring Linux with Native Tools
Robert Andresen,
BMC Software

Linux is gaining interest as a solution across many hardware platforms. But once applications are ported to an open source operating system what options are available to monitor their performance and availability? Performance monitoring traditionally has audiences ranging from systems administration, concerned with solving current performance problems, through capacity planners, concerned with predicting growth over time. Native Linux solutions are available to help both disciplines, from monitoring real-time performance through collecting statistics for capacity planning.

zSeries, Sub-Capacity Workload License Charges, Soft-Caps, and WLM
Richard Ralston, Humana Inc.

With the advent of zSeries processors and z/OS, IBM decided to offer a new software cost structure.  The new pricing structure, Sub-Capacity Workload License Charges, attempts to reduce the cost of key IBM software in the z/OS environment.  Mr. Ralston discusses his experiences with Sub-Capacity License Charges, the tools available to help manage the LPARs running sub-capacity WLC, results and benefits.

User Experiences

By popular demand we are arranging two half hour sessions of “how to’s”.  The presenters will provide a unique perspective on their experiences within the framework of their topic.

Catalog address space performance:  Where do you find the information?
Greg Scriba,
BMC Software

As we combine Plexi onto larger and larger Physical Systems, there are a few common resources that will have to be configured to handle the heavier load.  One of them is your Catalog Address space.  How do you understand what it’s doing, and how do you track it?  We’ll cover a few ideas.

Capacity Planning Using a Spreadsheet
Donna Folkerts,
IBM

We all would like to have the newest and greatest tools available to assist us in predicting the growth of the workloads on our systems.  Often the reality is that the option is not possible.  We have consistently and accurately predicted upgrade requirements using a spreadsheet, regression analysis and knowledge of the environment.  This presentation will explain the approach we have used successfully for a number of years.
