V or Not to V: A Practical Guide to Virtualization

Gene P. Fernando, BMC

Virtualization has become so widespread that industry pundits have called it a megatrend. Many forms of Virtualization are available today, each with its own set of potential gains. Of course, with every new technology comes a new set of problems. This paper explores the benefits of Virtualization and discusses the difficulties in measuring the results in the real world. A case study is included to present a practical approach for measuring and forecasting growth for virtual servers.

z/VM & Linux on IBM System z

Brian Grondin, Mainline Information Systems

Brian will provide update information on what’s new with z/VM as a virtualization technology and also discuss some of the options using it as part of getting started with Linux on IBM System z.  He’ll explore the value of z/VM and Linux on System z by showing how you can build an environment to support things ranging from server consolidation to new application workloads in a way that can not only help reduce your total cost of ownership, but also provide you with the solutions needed to move your enterprise forward.  Whether it’s picking your first application, or finding ways to grow your existing application environments, you’ll be provided with information that you will find useful as you look for ways to more fully exploit the power of the System z platform.

VMware Virtualization
Bill Call, VMware

During this presentation, we'll focus on VMware's approach to x86 virtualization and the challenges we faced.  Along the way, we'll dig into virtualization approaches for CPU, memory, disk and network contrasting the pros and cons as we see it.  Basic server partitioning will transition to distributed virtualization in the context of datacenter problems that can be addressed as well as those that cannot.  (At least not yet anyway.)  Finally we'll talk a little about what we see the future holds for distributed virtualization in the datacenter.
