Achieving Sustainable Business Agility
 with SOA & Web 2.0 (Part I)

Annie Shum, VP, BEA Systems
2004 A. A. Michelson Award Winner

While  the  SOA  promise  of business agility leading to competitive       advantage  is  truly  compelling,  there  is a growing concern among skeptics and proponents alike that pursuit of this agile nirvana may turn  out  to  be a fruitless exercise. This two part talk begins by demystifying  SOA  &  Web  2.0  through the lens of society and then takes  an  objective  look at the key ingredients required to unlock the promise of business agility with SOA and Web 2.0. The conclusion is  sobering  but will have far-reaching implications for tomorrow’s       IT:  namely,  leading  edge technology alone is inadequate.  Service life cycle   governance  and  holistic  SLA  Management  make  the  difference between success and failure of SOA.

MVS Performance Management and the
Evolution of I/T with the Help of Technology

Steve Samson, Author
2006 A. A. Michelson Award Winner

MVS performance management used to be a full time job with uncertain methodology and outcomes. Now it's an occasional concern with good tools available to solve specific problems. The evolution over 35 years of MVS has been dramatic. External tools and techniques helped. The level of knowledge about how the operating system works grew over time and the "legends" and "mysteries" were debunked and demystified.
However, the greatest contribution has been the amazing evolution of the operating system and the hardware it runs on. Best practices of performance management were absorbed into z/OS and System Z hardware, and IBM has been very accommodating in solving persistent problems with new technology. The process has been so successful that the lessons of z/OS have been applied to other operating system environments as well.

This presentation will wander through the evolution, focus on some of the high points, and even attempt to look further into the future.

Application View Reporting (AVR) - a "Home grown" applications reporting system spanning servers and platforms.

Jane Fiala-Curry, American Family Insurance

Application View Reporting provides a cross-platform view of an application.  The on-line report correlates distributed and mainframe resource consumption metrics with JVM statistics (garbage collection events), and web usage statistics (page views) over hours, days and weeks. AVR presents clear patterns of consumption and how they correlate with usage. This is extremely helpful in stages of phased rollouts.
