Autumn CCMG '06 Agenda Abstracts The Speakers Connecticut Computer Measurement GroupAutumn CCMG Membership Meeting Agenda Crowne Plaza (formerly Radisson Hotel), Cromwell - Friday, October 13, 2006 ________________________________________ The Connecticut Computer Measurement Group announces its Autumn Conference, with again a mix of national, international and local guest speakers. Some sessions are previews of presentations that will be given at the International Conference in Reno. For instance, Denise Arruda shares her success in tackling problem after problem, in the performance Bottleneck Cycle. Fix one problem; identify another…. Irwin Kraus presents an alternative to the main line of mainframes available today. After lunch we’ll consider how to handle applications that don’t provide detailed Application Response Measurement (ARM) tracking information. Sessions drawn from two significant industry trends, ITIL and SOA, frame these presentations like bookends. As with Denise’s, and representing the best of CMG’s value, these sessions are drawn from the real-world experience of local practitioners. Last year at this time we were devoting sessions to building an Ark, after the record rains those early weeks of October. This year we’re counting on a warm Indian Summer, after the chilly season ending just now. Ron Potterhas been involved in IT for over 30 years, working in number of different industries. Before retiring, he was closely involved with a multi-year IT improvement initiative at the healthcare company that embraced the ITIL framework and associated best practices. He established a predictive capacity modeling process working closely with business, application development and infrastructure teams. His team was charged with building capacity models for all business units for their mission critical applications. He is currently working part-time spoiling grandchildren and, when not tackling that tough assignment, he is Best Practices Manager at TeamQuest Corporation. Irwin Kraus has over 35 years experience in the IT industry, beginning with the United States Marine Corps, and has worked for a variety of large user organizations and vendors. The last 20 years have been spent mostly with Amdahl Corporation, BGS Systems (now BMC), and EMC Corporation. Irwin is currently a technical sales consultant for Platform Solutions Inc., the developer of a new generation of mainframe computers. Irwin’s specialties include performance analysis and capacity planning. Irwin resides in eastern Massachusetts and enjoys sailing on Narragansett Bay and the nearby Atlantic, hiking, and skiing (particularly in the US Rocky Mountains). Irwin is a member of the IEEE Computer Society and is interested in the application of technology to software development and testing. Denise Arruda is a Performance Engineer with FM Global. She is responsible for performance testing a variety of custom .Net applications. She also works with the production support teams to monitor and resolve production performance issues. Denise received her undergraduate degree from the University of Massachusetts in Computer Science, and received a Masters of Science degree from the University of New Haven in Computer Science. Denise has been in the IS industry for 18 years. The last seven years she has concentrated in performance engineering working with both Java and .Net applications. James Bouhana Sean Hickman has over 16 years of experience in Information Systems with the Leverage Group, Travelers, IBM, and, Aetna. Sean's has worked in the insurance and healthcare fields, primarily focused on large scale integration and object technologies. Sean is currently a Senior Architect for Aetna's Enterprise Framework Services department working on various integration patterns and frameworks to enable Service Oriented Architecture. In many cases tools are needed to support the new disciplines and associated processes but cost constraints hinder the acquisition of new tools. Capacity Management tools collect a substantial amount of information regarding the applications and infrastructure, information that could also be used by a number of other ITIL areas. Mr. Potter will outline ITIL structure, and then discuss ways that you can leverage your capacity management tools to support these other ITIL disciplines. 10:00 - 10:15 Break Mainframe Performance Track 10:15-11:30 z/OS® Performance on the New Generation of Itanium® 2 Mainframes Irwin Kraus – Platform Solutions, Inc. Who said the mainframe was dead? While the names of some of the “old” mainframe manufacturers are not heard or seen today, IBM and Platform Solutions, Inc. (PSI) are alive and in demand. Irwin’s presentation will give you insight into the how mainframe computers have evolved - from requiring large amounts of real estate, water and air conditioning to the small but mighty powerhouses they are today. Irwin will also describe the architectural and performance characteristics of the PSI mainframe, which is based on Intel Itanium 2 technology. Instruction set architecture realization, architectural characteristics of Itanium, implementation of real and virtual I/O subsystems will also be covered in this presentation. Open Systems Track 10:15-11:30 The Bottleneck Cycle Denise Arruda – FM Global, Inc. The bottleneck cycle refers to the iterative process of finding a performance bottleneck, eliminating it, and finding the next one. The hope is that eventually the bottleneck falls outside of your application’s performance requirements. This session will present a case study to illustrate how using the principles of application performance testing enabled us to traverse our way through the bottleneck cycle. It will discuss what types of data were collected and analyzed to identify each of the bottlenecks, and discuss the approach used to eliminate each of the bottlenecks, at a high level. 10:00 - 10:15 Break 11:30-12:30 Lunch Combined Sessions 12:30-1:45 Measurement of End-To-End Response Time in Unarmed Environments James Bouhana - Performance International, Inc. Transaction-based response time is the key metric for assessment of SLA compliance, installation accounting and performance troubleshooting. Both end-to-end measurement and breakdown by components of transaction path are required. This session reviews the available methods and focuses on environments that are not instrumented with ARM - the vast majority of installations. Theory and available tools are reviewed and a successful implementation is discussed in detail. **Please note that this presentation will be presented by either Jim himself,or one of his co-authors for the 2006 CMG paper, Mike Tsykin or Christopher D. Langshaw, both of Fujitsu Australia, Ltd 01:45 - 2:00 Break 02:00 - 3:15 Enterprise Integration with Consumer Directed SOA Sean Hickman - Aetna, Inc. Consumer Directed Service Oriented Architecture is a new approach to enterprise integration. Typical approaches focus on an integration hub pattern. While a hub based approach is well suited to certain situations, we believe hub based approaches unnecessarily increase the layering between consumer and provider applications within a corporate intranet. The additional layering increases costs and impacts performance. CDSOA is an integration approach that endeavors to provide information for consumers, and shares decision-making responsibility with consumers. We will explore our experiences implementing CDSOA within the context of an Enterprise Service Bus, our observations of the approach in practice, recommendations, and, discussion of the impacts of CDSOA to an organization. ________________________________________ |
